A rotary encoder, also called a shaft encoder, is an electro-mechanical device that converts the angular position or motion of a shaft to analog or digital output signals. There are two main types of rotary encoder: absolute and incremental. The output of an absolute encoder indicates the current shaft position, the output of an incremental encoder provides information about the motion of the shaft, which typically is processed  into information such as position, speed and distance. The rotary incremental encoder is the most widely used of all rotary encoders due to its low cost and ability to provide real-time position information. There are two kinds of shaft type: Shaft or Hollow shaft (∅6, ∅8, ∅15, ∅30, ∅40) with the output circuit type: Open Collector, Voltage Output, Line Driver, Totem Pole, Complemental or Push Pull; resolution: 10 p/r to 6000 p/r.
